The Camino del Norte follows the Northen coastline of Spain. This route follows the Via Agrippa for some of its way, which was used in the Middle Ages by Christian pilgrims when travel along the French Way was dangerous.

      Camino del Norte

      Camino del Norte entre Cerdigo e Islares
      The Camino del Norte follows the Northen coastline of Spain. This route follows the Via Agrippa for some of its way, which was used in the Middle Ages by Christian pilgrims when travel along the French Way was dangerous.
      Many locations on the Camino del Norte are holiday destinations with numerous accommodation options. Many towns have generic accommodation types listed, rather than a long list of all options.
      There is a link to the Camino Primitivo at Villaviciosa. To use this, set the finish point to Villaviciosa and then make a separate plan for the Primitivo.
      The starting pooint for those wishing to make the 100km pilgrimage is Baamonde.

      Camino del Norte
      The main Camino route starting in Irun.
      Road Route to Castro Urdiales
      A road route from Ontón to Castro Urdiales using National Route 634
      This route cuts many kilometres off the leg to Castro Urdiales but does so at the expense of following a dangerous, high traffic road.
      Bilabo Northern Route
      An easier route, away from the traditional Camino route, from Bilabo centre to Portugalete following the Northern edge of the river and across the Bizkaia bridge.
      GR E9 Route
      The sendero de gran recorrido (GR) paths are a series of long distance footpaths in Europe. The E9 European long distance path follows the Northern coast of Europe. This route follows the E9 for a short distance along the coast.
      Route to Ribadeo via Tapia del Casariego
      An alternative route, closer to the coast, on the approach to Ribadeo.
      Original route to Mondoñedo
      The most common modern route goes to Ribadeo and then follows the Western side of the Ría de Foz estuary to Mondoñedo. This is original pilgrimage route, following the Eastern side of the estuary
      Northern route from Baamonde to Sobrado
      An alternative route from Baamonde to Sobrado or Boimil. The route is shorter but has less services and accommodation.
      Extend the Northern route from Baamonde to Boimil
      Extend the route from Baamonde, returning to the main route at Boimil, rather than Sobrado.
      Meet the Camino Frances at Lavacolla
      An alternative route from Boimorto to Lavacolla. The route avoids Arzúa and the more busy Camino Frances for some distance.
      Meet the Camino Frances at A Brea (O Pino)
      An variation on the route from Boimorto to Lavacolla, meeting the Camino Frances earlier, at A Brea.

      Pilgrim Albergue An albergue (pilgrim hostel) for pilgrims only. Pilgrim albergues are often run by volunteer societies or as municipal albergues by the local municipality.
